If your business has been around for a few years, you know that you must update your company website every few years (or more) to stay current. This typically involves a new web design template and fresh website content. Perhaps you need to add a few more services pages or include a press section so your PR person can post all of your new earned media coverage. When you are in the process of making all of these website changes, don’t forget about one of the most important components of a website re-design: SEO, or search engine optimization.
SEO will help your company website show up on search results when someone types in a particular search term. Many companies forget about this step in the website development process, or they hire a web design firm that doesn’t specialize in SEO. This may leave them with a beautifully designed website that functions properly, but that no one can find. Obviously this type of website doesn’t bring many sales leads to the company.
What is involved in optimizing my site for search engines?
I tell my website clients that the SEO process should ideally start before any website development work or web copywriting. Here at AimFire Marketing, we include SEO as part of our website building process because we believe that strongly in the power of SEO to help a company’s website build traffic. The beginning of the search engine optimization process involves heavy research. This includes learning which keyword phrases are most important to the business, as well as which ones are more popularly searched, in addition to some industry and competitive research. Once the appropriate keywords have been identified, the tricky part is weaving them into the website navigation, content and tags without impacting readability and flow.
What if my site has launched recently. Can I still optimize it?
While it’s a little more challenging to evaluate an existing site and try to optimize it for search engine visibility, it can be done. By following similar steps above, I can give recommendations to my Indianapolis SEO clients on changes to their existing content, tweaks to their navigation structure, and other things that will help improve visibility. In addition, regular content updates and blogging on industry-related topics will help to boost your ranking for particular keyword phrases that you’ve identified.
